Celebrating caregiver for people with disabilities

Celebrating Caregivers with Free Tips and Resources

February 23 is National Caregivers Day. Caregivers do so much for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Here are a few ways they give support.

• They help with daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, and getting dressed.

• They take people to work, doctor visits, and social outings.

• They give emotional support.

• They help build independent living skills.

Their work helps self-advocates plan, build, and live the lives they choose.

Why Are Caregivers Important?

When people with IDD live independently, it’s better for everyone. The person feels hopeful. They feel connected to others. They have better mental and physical health. With the right support, self-advocates can get a job. They can earn, spend, and save money. They can contribute to their communities. So caregivers’ work helps everyone.

Caregiver Challenges

Caregiving can be hard. The hours are long. The pay is low. Caregivers may feel stress or burnout. They need support to keep doing this hard work. When we take care of caregivers, we make life better for everyone. Here are a few ways to support them.

• Say thank you. Let them know you value their work. A kind word can mean a lot.

• Fight for higher pay and better working conditions. Write to lawmakers. Donate to groups that fight for caregiver rights like The Arc of the US, Caregiver Action Network, and more.

• Share caregivers’ stories. Write letters to the editor. Post on social media. Let others see how needed caregivers are. Show how much they deserve our support. Check out this powerful documentary about caregiving, available for free from February 20-23, 2025.
