July is Independence Month! It is also disability pride month. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) can show their independence by choosing where and how they live. For older adults with IDD, that choice can be hard. But it matters.
A Story of Choice and Change
In our new video, James talks with his friend Charlie about aging and independent living. Charlie spent years trying to find a place to live that was right for him. He lived in an institution as a young man. Then he moved to a group home. He finally found his place in a shared apartment.
Charlie lived through a time when many thought people with disabilities should only live in institutions. He had to take many steps, go through red tape, and wait longer than he should have. But he kept going. Today, Charlie lives in a home he chose. It is a place he loves.

Lessons on Aging and Independent Living
Charlie’s story shows us that self-determination doesn’t stop when we get older. In fact, it becomes even more important. As people with IDD age, they should not be moved to group homes or nursing homes just because it’s easy. They should be asked “What do you want? What does a good life look like for you?” Then we should help make that life possible.
Older adults with IDD need help planning where they want to live. They need people who listen and respect their rights. Family, case managers, and staff all play a role. But the person should lead the way.
What can help:
- Ask the person what they want. Keep checking in.
- Make a plan that puts their voice first.
- Learn about housing options in the community.
- Respect their right to change their mind.
