White self-advocate wearing sunglasses talks about building your own path to independence

Building Your Own Path to Independence

We’re celebrating Independence Month! Last week, we shared Charlie’s story. This week, we’ll hear from more self-advocates. They share what being independent means to them.

It’s Different for Everyone

Independent living doesn’t look the same for every person. Some people want to live in their own apartment or house. Others may want to stay at home with family but be more active in their community. Some people need a lot of support. Others need just a little. The most important thing is that the person with IDD is the one making the plan.

We talked to four self-advocates about what independent living means to them. Each had a different answer. But all agreed it’s about making their own choices and living life their way.

Planning Your Own Path to Independence

Even when people need support, they can still lead the way. With the right tools and the right team, they can take steps to reach their goals. That could mean learning skills like cooking, paying bills, or using public transportation. It could mean joining a class, volunteering, or going to events in the community.

You are the expert on your own life. You have the right to make a plan that fits your goals and dreams, not someone else’s idea of what you should do. Start by thinking about what matters most to you. What kind of life do you want? Where do you want to live? Who do you want to spend time with?

Here are some tips to help you:

  • Take time to think about what you really want. Tell someone you trust.
  • Make a plan that matches your goals and your voice. If you have a person-centered plan, make sure it includes your goals.
  • Break big goals into small steps you can work on over time.
  • Ask for support from people who care about you, like family, friends, or staff.

You don’t have to do it alone. You can ask for help and stay in charge.
